Energy Use in India Map

ABOUT THE DATA

With the growth in population, there has been constant increase in demand for food and energy. The availibility of energy sources determines the lifestyle practices of individuals and communities. A map of spatial distribution helps in accessing the practices on a national scale. The map of kerosene use for lighting shows regions in North and East predominately use kerosene for lighting. Similar analysis could be done for use of solid biomass for cooking. Both practices reflect potential ecological impact.

The map of estimated energy use in agriculture is a model estimate of energy used for ground water pumping. In this scenario availability of energy sources helped farmers to pump out ground water to meet the growing demands for food. Years of pumping has resulted in drop in the average depth of ground water. This drop has resulted in increase in demand in energy use for pumping and stress in agricultural output. The map shows the energy used in kwh/ha by district.

The maps were generated using Government of India Census data from year 2011.
